Not Your Mom’s Jello, Gelatin for Health!

Today, we’re talking gelatin… and not the Jell-O kind, which I’m not really a big fan of anyways. I’m talking about gelatin like good for your body gelatin. Didn’t know gelatin like this existed? Me either until I recently and now I have to say I’m hooked.

So you have to know (and then immediately forget) what gelatin is to understand why it’s so beneficial and should definitely be a part of your beauty routine. Gelatin is a powder that’s made from the skin, bones, and tissues of animals (told you… 1.. 2.. 3.. let’s move on). It’s a great source of protein and filled with amino acids that will help build strong hair, skin, and nails! (FYI – Gelatin makes up anywhere from 25% – 35% of the overall protein in your body!)

Gelatin has quickly become one of my favorite supplements based on how much two little tablespoons a day can do for your body!

Some of my favorite reasons to incorporate gelatin into your daily life:

Gelatin is a good source of dietary collagen and helps with skin’s firmness and overall tone.

(This is #1 in my book since I found gelatin when looking for a natural cure for my chronic under the eye bags. So far, so good! My skin has really improved and looks fuller than ever before!)

Loss of collagen causes wrinkles. More gelatin, more collagen, less wrinkles.

The protein in gelatin keeps you fuller longer so have some bone broth when your 3pm snack craving hits and I guarantee you’ll make it to dinner!

Can’t fall asleep? Some studies show gelatin taken before bed can shorten the time it takes you to fall asleep.

Okay, I’m in but how?

My favorite ways to get gelatin are through either 1- gelatin powder or 2 – bone broth. I use this gelatin powder and mix one tablespoon in my coffee every morning. Insider tip – put the gelatin in your mug first, add your almond milk and then let sit for a minute. I give it a good stir and then throw the mug under the Keurig. The hot coffee mixed with the thick milk and voila! no clumps. It took me a few days to perfect the mix and I’ll be honest – I have a HUGE texture thing so gunky coffee was not going to work for me.

I try to put another tablespoon into my sleepy bedtime tea but have found that if I don’t finish it (which I always fall asleep before I do) then I have a gelatinous mess to scrape out of my mug in the morning… so jury’s still out on that one. Have a great way you incorporate gelatin into your daily routine? I’d love to hear about it in the comments!

My second favorite way to get all the goodies from gelatin is bone broth. If you haven’t tried Thrive Market yet, you’re definitely missing out! (They’re a super affordable online retailer that wants to make healthy living easy & affordable for everyone. You can check out more on Thrive Market here) One of my favorite bone broth brands Epic has a variety of flavors – beef jalapeno, savory chicken, or turkey cranberry sage that I love sipping alone. If I’m using bone broth for a recipe or cooking component, Pacific Foods is a little cheaper and more basic (turkey, chicken) and is also available on Thrive Market.

Disclaimer – you kind of have to get used to the blander flavor profile – this isn’t super sodium rich chicken noodle soup k?

Next up on my list this month is to try to make some healthy gelatin gummies at home! Let me know if you have any tips/tricks or bomb recipes I need to give a shot.
